In which country do people consume the most chocolate?

In which country do people consume the most chocolate?

According to data from a study published by the Statista Research Department in 2016, Switzerland leads in per capita chocolate consumption, with around 9 kg per person annually.

Other countries with high per capita consumption include:

  • Estonia : 9 kg per person.
  • Germany : 8.1 kg per person.
  • Sweden : 7.3 kg per person.
  • Bulgaria : 7.2 kg per person.
  • Ireland : 7 kg per person.
  • United Kingdom : 6.6 kg per person.
  • Austria : 6.2 kg per person.
  • Finland : 6 kg per person.
  • Poland : 5.7 kg per person.

These figures reflect the average annual consumption of chocolate per inhabitant in each country, highlighting the strong appreciation of chocolate in several European cultures.

What about Portugal?

Portugal is not one of the main consumers of chocolate in Europe, but I understand that the numbers are growing. Currently, each Portuguese person consumes around 3 to 4 kg of chocolate per year, a figure that is still modest compared to the countries of northern Europe.

However, in recent years the demand for sustainable bean-to-bar chocolates with more natural ingredients has increased .

Brands like Alma do Cacau are part of this movement, offering products that highlight the purity and authenticity of cocoa, taking the chocolate experience to another level.

The Future of Chocolate Consumption in Portugal

Although we are not yet among the countries that consume the most chocolate, the evolution of consumption habits shows a promising path. If the Portuguese continue to explore and value artisanal and quality chocolates, who knows if one day we will be able to climb this ranking?

After all, chocolate is not just a treat – it is culture, tradition and a true passion!
